Pray For Amarah

Population: 323,000

Capital of the Maysan province, Amarah is located north of Basra on the Tigris River. It’s a trade center for livestock, wool, and hides, and it is known for weaving and silverware. Before the Iraq War, Amarah was home to a large portion of the Mandaeans of Iraq who are an ethnoreligious group also knowns as the Sabians. They revere John the Baptist but consider Jesus to be a false messiah. Due to persecution, they fled Iraq in the 90s and their number dropped from 60,000 to 5,000-10,000. Eighty percent became refugees in Syria and Jordan.

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Luke 19:10

Lord, thank You that You have not forgotten the people of Amarah or those who have fled from that place. You came to seek and save them. We ask that You move mightily and save many from Amarah. We also ask that You would open the eyes of the Mandaeans, show them Jesus is the Messiah and John was always pointing to Him, and even lay on their hearts to return to Amarah to share the truth of Jesus with the people there.
