Population: 1,400,000
It is the main port of Iraq on the western bank of the waterway that is formed by the Tigris and Euphrates rivers joining together. Basra experienced extensive damage in the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s and the Iraq War in 2003. Even though it sits in a productive agricultural area, it is home to large portions of Iraq’s oil that is being produced and is the main port city – this city is drowning in poverty with more than 46% of the population living below the poverty line.
"For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death." 2 Corinthians 7:10
Father, the people of Basra are grieving, they have suffered greatly and are still suffering today as they face such poverty and corruption in the government. Lord, give them a godly grief that will produce repentance for their sin and lead to salvation. Show the people of Basra that apart from Christ their grief will continue to only produce death. Give them hope in You, Oh Lord.
