It is the capital of the Dhi Qar province and lies on the Euphrates River. It is located near the ancient city of Ur, where Abraham had once lived. Previously, it had a diverse population of Muslims, Mandaeans, and Jews, but now it is predominantly occupied by Shia Muslims.

Lord, You called Abram out of this land and chose Your people from him. Again, Lord, call out those from this land that will follow You in complete obedience and share Your truth with those around them.
