Pray For The Marshes

Population: 40,000

The Marshes are found in the southern part of Iraq on the floodplains of the Euphrates and Tigris and are located between the cities of Nasiriyah, Basra, and Amarah. In 1991, Saddam Hussein began to drain the wetlands of Iraq to punish the Marsh Arabs for participating in the 1991 uprising against him. This is considered one of the most tragic human and environmental catastrophes of the 20th century. This people group went from about 500,000 to 20,000 when the Marshes were drained.

"I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD." Psalm 40:1-3

Father, we cry out for the Marsh Arabs. Lord, hear their cry and pull them out of the miry bog and set their feet on a rock. A people that live in a miry bog are sinking apart from You. Lord, give the Marsh Arabs that have been so mistreated and persecuted for their political ties and are so poor and needy a new song, a praise to You that they will sing about to all those around them.
